Peter immigrated to the United States in 1888 and settled in Franklin, Renville county, Minnestota {big surprise that my Norwegian ancestors settled in MN, huh?}

Kvam was a farm in Inderoen, Norway ? near Trondheim.

Peter?s sister, Pauline married Johannes Erikssen Kvam and I?m assuming that this is where they lived since she didn?t immigrate to the US like Peter did. What do you think ? is this their house or perhaps just near where they lived?

Interestingly enough, Peter?s wife?s maiden name was Anna Margret Kvam.? I don?t know if she is related to Pauline?s husband or if perhaps they just lived on the same farm and took the same name.

I might be able to solve the mystery if I could actually translate the message on the postcard.? But it happens to be in Norwegian.? Which I don?t speak.? I can pick out the ?Dear Brother? and ?Your Sister, Pauline?? and something about a picture of Kvam, but that?s about it.

Does anyone out there know what this says??? Is it just small talk or is there something important there?

Mexico arrests 5 in deadly casino torching

President Felipe Calderon declared three days of national mourning after the attack and in a television interview on Monday pledged to continue the fight against organized crime.

He admitted corruption among judges and police was still helping criminal gangs go unpunished.

"We have to speed things up because we know the criminals have corrupted the institutions at all levels of government," Calderon said. "This cannot be tolerated."

It was a tough and stressful working day.

It was hot and humid, I was tired, sweating profusely, my throat parched with thirst, and as I walked home late in the evening, I found myself opposite my favorite bar.

I looked yearningly, tempted, overcome by a strong craving, desperate to have a glass of chilled beer.

Nothing like a glass of cold beer to drive my blues away ? the ?panacea? to my ?stressed-out? state!

But I didn?t go into the bar.

Instead, I rushed to the nearest Chaatwala and had some pani-puri.

The moment I put the first pani-puri in my mouth, the intense overpowering medley of sweet and sour, pungently hot, fiery and spicy flavor of the chutneys, jal jeera and ?pani? overwhelmed me and made my craving thirst for beer disappear pretty fast and enabled me to stick my resolve of giving up drinking.

I had suitably improvised the concept of ?Force Field Analysis? to break my drinking habit and then keep it that way.

Long back, I had quit smoking too, and to stay that way, make sure I didn?t start again, I used force field analysis with great success.

Force Field Analysis provides a framework for looking at the factors or forces that influence a situation or activity.

Restraining Forces are those which inhibit or discourage the occurrence of a particular activity and Driving Forces are those which promote, facilitate and encourage the occurrence of the same activity.

Let?s say?Driving Forces are positive anchors?and?Restraining Forces are negative anchors?[similar to the anchors in NLP].

Let?s take the case of drinking. Sit down, close your eyes, and introspect.

Can you identify the stimuli, the triggers, and the situations, the driving forces, which create in you the desire and give rise to the urge to drink?

These driving forces can be anything, internal and external tangible or intangible ? people, situations, events, parties, tendencies, moods, foods, social or organizational trends, practices, norms.

Do a simple exercise.

For the next week, or even a month, be yourself, live as you do, but mindfully record all the occasions on which you had alcohol and carefully list the driving forces that motivated you to drink.

Was it a social event, party, friends, as an appertif before some gourmet food, smoking, dancing, ?creativity?, for reducing inhibitions or enhancing excitement as a prelude to sex, tiredness, happiness, celebration, depression, boredom, the company or memories of some people, sad memories, self pity, jealousy, inner craving, addiction??

Do it thoughtfully and make an exhaustive list of the driving forces.

Make a list of restraining forces that discourage or inhibit you from drinking.

Concern for health?

Wife?s nagging?

Physical Exercise?

Values, religious and cultural taboos, regulations like prohibition and no drinking zones, work and hobbies, social encouragement of temperance?

China turns to Libya rebels, urges "stable transition" (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China urged a "stable transition of power" in Libya and said on Wednesday it is in contact with the rebel National Transitional Council, the clearest sign that Beijing has effectively shifted recognition to forces poised to defeat Muammar Gaddafi.

"(China) respects the choice of the Libyan people and hopes for a stable transition of power," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement issued on the ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

"We have always attached significance to the important role of the National Transitional Council in solving Libya's problems, and maintain contact with it," Ma said, referring to the main Libyan rebel group fighting Gaddafi's shrinking forces in the capital Tripoli.

"We hope that the future new government will adopt effective measures, draw together the forces of different factions, and restore social order as quickly as possible," he said, referring to Libya.

Beijing has yet to formally recognize the rebel forces as Libya's new leaders. But Ma's comments and a flurry of other official remarks indicated Beijing has decisively abandoned Gaddafi and turned to the rebels likely to take full control of Tripoli soon.

"We hope to play an active role in rebuilding Libya in the future, together with the international community," the spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Shen Danyang, told a news conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

China and Russia have a tradition of opposing intervention in sovereign states, even when Western governments favor military action on humanitarian grounds.

But Beijing had been stepping up engagement with Libyan rebel leaders in recent months, even as it said those meetings were part of an effort to encourage a negotiated end to the six-month old war.

China is the world's second-biggest oil consumer, and last year obtained 3 percent of its imported crude from Libya.

China's official Xinhua news agency cautioned in a commentary against too much optimism.

"Gaddafi's era is over, no matter what his personal end game is. But don't be optimistic too soon," it wrote. "The power games are only just beginning."

BACKING A UNITED NATIONS ROLE

China did not use its U.N. Security Council veto power in March to block a resolution that authorized the NATO bombing campaign against Gaddafi's forces, but it then condemned the strikes and urged compromise between his government and rebels.

The United Nations should now lead post-war efforts in Libya, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told the U.N. chief, adding that Beijing was willing to help rebuild the north African country.

In a phone call with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Yang suggested Beijing wants bodies such as the U.N., rather than Western governments alone, to coordinate international involvement in post-war Libya.

This would give China a say in decisions, despite the leading role Western powers played in defeating the forces of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"The United Nations should play a leading role in post-war arrangements for Libya, and China encourages the United Nations to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the African Union and Arab League," Yang said, according to the ministry website late on Tuesday (www.mfa.gov.cn).

China is "willing to work alongside the United Nations to promote a rapid stabilisation in Libya and a swift course toward reconciliation and reconstruction," said Yang.

In a phone call on Wednesday to Brazil's foreign minister Antonio Patriota, Yang said the BRICS group of emerging powers should coordinate policy over Libya and "exert an active influence," the Chinese foreign ministry said.

The BRICS bloc brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, all of whom voiced worry about the expanding NATO air campaign over Libya.

On Tuesday, China urged Libya to protect Chinese investments and said their oil trade benefited both countries, after a Libyan rebel warned that Chinese oil companies could lose out after the ousting of Gaddafi because Beijing did not offer enough support to the rebels.

But Ahmed Jehani, a senior rebel representative for reconstruction, told Reuters in an interview that a Libyan rebel government would honor all the oil contracts granted during the Gaddafi era, including those of Chinese companies.

China shipped in roughly 150,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Libya last year through Unipec, the trading arm of Asia's top refiner Sinopec Corp, holder of the long-term supply contract. That amounted to about one tenth of Libya's crude exports.

The Eyes are about 50 million light-years away in the constellation of Virgo (The Virgin) and are some 100 000 light-years apart. The nickname comes from the apparent similarity between the cores of this pair of galaxies -- two white ovals that resemble a pair of eyes glowing in the dark when seen in a moderate-sized telescope.

But although the centres of these two galaxies look similar, their outskirts could not be more different. The galaxy in the lower right, known as NGC 4435, is compact and seems to be almost devoid of gas and dust. In contrast, in the large galaxy in the upper left (NGC 4438) a lane of obscuring dust is visible just below its nucleus, young stars can be seen left of its centre, and gas extends at least up to the edges of the image.

The contents of NGC 4438 have been stripped out by a violent process: a collision with another galaxy. This clash has distorted the galaxy's spiral shape, much as could happen to the Milky Way when it collides with its neighbouring galaxy Andromeda in three or four billion years.

NGC 4435 could be the culprit. Some astronomers believe that the damage caused to NGC 4438 resulted from an approach between the two galaxies to within about 16 000 light-years that happened some 100 million years ago. But while the larger galaxy was damaged, the smaller one was significantly more affected by the collision. Gravitational tides from this clash are probably responsible for ripping away the contents of NGC 4438, and for reducing NGC 4435's mass and removing most of its gas and dust.

Another possibility is that the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 86, further away from The Eyes and not visible in this image, was responsible for the damage caused to NGC 4438. Recent observations have found filaments of ionised hydrogen gas connecting the two large galaxies, indicating that they may have collided in the past.

The elliptical galaxy Messier 86 and The Eyes belong to the Virgo Cluster, a very rich grouping of galaxies. In such close quarters, galaxy collisions are fairly frequent, so perhaps NGC 4438 suffered from encounters with both NGC 4435 and Messier 86.

This picture is the first to be produced as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme. This is a new initiative to produce astronomical images for educational and public outreach purposes. The programme mainly makes use of time when the sky conditions are not suitable for science observations to take pictures of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects. The data are also made available to professional astronomers through ESO's science archive.

In this case, although there were some clouds, the atmosphere was exceptionally stable, which allowed very sharp details to be revealed in this image taken using the VLT's FORS2 [1] instrument. Light passing through two different filters was used: red (coloured red) and green-yellow (coloured blue), and the exposure times were 1800 seconds and 1980 seconds, respectively.

Texas Aamp;M University is working to increase awareness of and participation in scientific and technological educational opportunities among teachers and students in south Texas with the help of a $50,000 grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable wing of Motorola Solutions Inc.

The grant, one of five across Texas and roughly 100 nationwide announced today by the Motorola Solutions Foundation as part of its Innovation Generation grant program, was awarded through the College of Science Educational Outreach and Women?s Programs Office to support the South Texas Science Initiative (STSI). That is a collaborative effort to increase minority representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields by encouraging participation in the statewide Texas Science Olympiad, hosted annually by Texas Aamp;M University.

?The future of American innovation depends on a diverse pipeline of critical thinkers who are well versed in STEM principles,? says Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. ?Through the Innovation Generation program, we are thrilled to partner with programs like the South Texas Science Initiative at Texas Aamp;M to provide students and teachers with the necessary tools to explore their STEM interests and pursue innovation.?

Specifically, the STSI will help fund Science Olympiad preparatory workshops to train teachers in south Texas school districts and encourage student interest in the rigorous statewide competition, which is designed to test both the aptitude and imaginations of the next generation of scientists and engineers in a variety of subjects, from biology, chemistry and physics to earth science, computers and technology. The training will be offered via video conference in collaboration with Regional Science Olympiad directors Dr. James Silliman at Texas Aamp;M University-Corpus Christi and Dr. Ludivina Avila at South Texas College.

By exposing teachers as key student influencers to the Science Olympiad and its unique platform of challenging yet friendly and creative competition, program administrators hope to stimulate their interest and, in turn, that of their students in both the Olympiad as well as the plethora of potential STEM-related careers it spotlights.

?We are hopeful through this initiative that we will be able to enhance the growth of the Texas Science Olympiad throughout the South Texas region,? says Dr. Nancy Magnussen, director of Educational Outreach and Women?s Programs and state director for the Texas Science Olympiad. ?The Motorola Solutions Foundation is very dedicated to science education and wants to be an integral part of preparing the youngsters in the Valley for careers in science and technology.?

Hack Bluetooth into Your Old Car Stereo for Wireless Audio Streaming [DIY]

If you're still cruising around in a car with an old stereo, that doesn't mean you're stuck with old technology. Blogger and DIYer Kevin Roof dreamt of the ability to wirelessly stream his music library to his deck, so he hacked in stereo Bluetooth support.

By fooling the tape deck into thinking it had a cassette loaded, he was able to hack in Bluetooth support using a bunch of spare parts. You'll need a USB connector, an 1/8-inch jack, a power adaptor, an isolation transformer, an A2DP Bluetooth Module, and a soldering iron to follow Roof's guide, but he was able to get it working on the cheap. With the exception of a switch to flip between the Bluetooth source and the radio, you won't see any aesthetic changes. Blue Bloods' New Boss: We're Not Changing the Show (omg!)

Blue Bloods' new executive producer, Ed Zuckerman, wants to make one thing clear to viewers: He's not messing with the formula that made the sophomore CBS drama a hit in its first year.

The veteran TV writer/producer was hired in May to replace outgoing creators Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess amid reports that CBS wanted to make the show more procedural. (Zuckerman's resume supported the theory: He served long stints on JAG and Law & Order.) However, Zuckerman insists nothing will change.

"The idea is to keep the show the same balanced show between a case of the week and the Reagan family issues and family drama," Zuckerman tells TVGuide.com. "I think if anything, we might be doing a little more Reagan family stuff this year."

Read on to see what's in store for the Reagans, how the new mayor (David Ramsey) will make trouble for Frank (Tom Selleck), and what new case will run throughout the season.

TVGuide.com: What's the transition been like for you?
Ed Zuckerman: It's actually been pretty smooth. That's a good thing for me, because the last couple shows I've been on haven't lasted very long. [Zuckerman most recently served as executive producer for ABC's short-lived legal drama The Whole Truth.] There's a lot of continuity. ... I kept almost all of the old writers who are a great resource. They're good writers, and they know the characters, and they know where the men's room is. ... People really know what they're doing.

Blue Bloods parts ways with creators

Reports say the show is changing creatively to be more procedural. Is that true?
Zuckerman: The only basis for that as far as I can tell is that I used to work on a procedural show. So, someone was making a leap from that. I have received no such marching orders. The idea is to keep the show the same balanced show between a case of the week and Reagan family issues and family drama. I think if anything, we might be doing a little more Reagan family stuff this year.

How so?
Zuckerman: Some episodes are going to put family members in conflict. Their jobs put them in conflict. There are going to be some romances involving at least two family members this season. We're going to try to deepen the role of Henry [Len Cariou]. He's not just at home cooking dinner. He's still very much alive and vital. And in real life former commissioners do many things. We're also going to try and pay a little more attention to Danny's marriage to Linda [Amy Carlson].

Last season had an ongoing story with the Blue Templar. Are you abandoning that type of structure for the season?
Zuckerman: No. We have one story that will run the whole season. We are launching something at the very end of the first episode, and it we're going to develop it slowly over the course of the season. It involves a story for Jamie [Will Estes] and an organized crime figure. It's not going to be in every episode. It's going to pop up here and there, and it's going to culminate in, we hope, a pretty cool conclusion in either Episode 21 or 22.

How does Jamie get involved with this organized crime member?
Zuckerman: Jamie totally by chance befriends a young man [Eric Morris] who's roughly his peer . He is the Jamie of an organized crime family ? the younger member of an organized crime family We're not even sure if he's involved with the family or not, but Jamie has to decide whether or not to pursue this relationship as a friendship or as an informer.

We also know that Monica Raymund will play Jamie's new partner. What does that mean for Nick Turturro's Renzulli?
Zuckerman: We may not see him every week. Actually, [in this case] reality is our friend. Renzulli is a sergeant, and as a sergeant he rides on patrol with a variety of different patrol officers. Some weeks he rides with Jamie and some weeks Jamie will be riding with somebody else. Jamie will do a lot of shifting around. He'll have a variety of new partners. As for his female partner ... some interesting issues arise between the two of them.

Is that perhaps one of the romances you hinted at before?
Zuckerman: Well she's married and the Reagans are not adulterers. But she's not happy in her marriage, so I think it's going to be a very interesting dynamic.

Let's talk about the new mayor.
Zuckerman: He's a very dynamic mayor. He's a young man; he's an African-American. He comes from sort of a community-organizing background, which is the antithesis of Frank Reagan's background as an old law-and-order guy. So in many ways, they're opposites. The Reagan family is a classic 20th century New York police family, and this mayor is a very 21st century character. He is a politician, and Frank Reagan always has a little bit of trouble with politics. The mayor represents a changing city, and the Reagan family must come to terms with the fact that this is not the world they grew up in.

How does having a new boss affect Frank's day-to-day duties as police commissioner?
Zuckerman: Frank is a great cop, so it's not a matter of police methods. It's just a matter of confronting who the players of this city are. ... It's a matter of personalities between two very strong men with different agendas. The mayor will have a very political agenda, and it's a broader agenda than the last mayor had. Frank just wants to do the right thing and make the city safe for all people. For the first few episodes, they are kind of dancing around each other. It's also normal protocol that when the new mayor is sworn in, that the police commissioner automatically resigns, and it's up to the new mayor to keep him or not. I'll keep you guessing as to whether or not Frank remains the police commissioner after the first episode, but it is an issue.

You mentioned focusing on Danny [Donnie Wahlberg] and Linda's marriage before. What plans do you have for them?
Zuckerman: We will have a number of episodes where things happen in Danny's house that are caused by things happening outside the house, or vice versa. In one episode, he has a fight with Linda that leaves him very irritated and it causes an incident on the street because he hasn't gotten over that. So we see the police work affecting the home life and we see the home life affect the police work.

What about Danny and Jackie (Jennifer Esposito)?
Zuckerman: I like that dynamic a lot, and we have no changes in that. We want to keep that going. I think that works very well. We have an episode coming up where Jackie goes undercover with Danny backing her up.

And Erin [Bridget Moynahan]? The case in the season premiere actually involved a friend of hers, right?
Zuckerman: Right. There's a murder, and the new widow happens to be a close friend of Erin's. Because the circumstances of the murder are actually pretty scandalous, the widow would actually prefer that the murderer go free than have a trial which would expose her family to the shame of finding out what her dead husband was up to. Erin, of course, doesn't want to let a murderer go free, so she's torn between a personal request and the duty of her job.

What other plans do you have for her this season?
Zuckerman: We have at least one episode coming up where she'll be doing a murder trial, and there's probably a romance coming up in the cards for her as well. [At home], there's one episode where Nicky wants more freedom and Erin's very nervous about it, especially since some teenagers were just murdered for no reason.

So, you have identified the two romances you mentioned, but what about Frank? We saw him with the reporter last season ? anything this year?
Zuckerman: We do have an idea for a relationship for Frank. It's still in the early stages so I can't speak in detail of it, but you may see Frank in a relationship with a somewhat surprising person.

You're taking over a show that became a hit last year. Do you have any specific goals to help the show grow?
Zuckerman: I think the first duty of any TV writer is to be entertaining and the second is to be intelligent. In my years writing for other shows, I think I learned how to structure mysteries to fool people a little bit, so I think some of the mystery elements of the show will be a little more twisty and subtle than they may have been in the past. I want to just keep the show as good as it was last year, and try to make it a little bit better. No major changes are in the cards.
