Rob Key quits Kent?s captaincy ? Cricket News Update
Former England batsman Rob Key, on Monday stepped down as Kent captain, ending seven seasons at the helm that had made him the longest serving skipper on the contemporary county circuit.
The 33-year-old right-handed batsman had taken over from ?David Fulton at the end of the 2005 season and led Kent to three successive Friends Life T20 tournament finals days. Under Key, the county also won the Twenty20 Cup title in 2007. The next year, they finished the Flt20 tournament as runner-ups, after losing to Essex.
His captaincy record in the LV = County Championship is not quite impressive, as he leaves the county in the second tier. After inheriting the team with a Division One status, he kept them there until they were relegated in 2008. Though they managed to regain Division One status at the earliest opportunity, but could not defend that and faced a relegation the next season, and have been in the second tier over the last two seasons.
This year, Kent ended the LV = County Championship Division Two as the third best side, trailing the promoted sides by 24 points. They also finished the 2012 Clydesdale Bank 40 competition as third best in their group.
All-rounder James Tredwell replaces Rob Key as the new Kent skipper. The left-handed batsman, who has also played one solitary Test match and 9 One Day Internationals for England, said that it was a great honour for him to be appointed as the club?s captain. He also wished his predecessor best of luck for his future endeavours.
"Having come through the Kent system, it is with great pride I take on this challenge," said Tredwell while speaking to media reporters after his appointment as Kent?s captain.
"I would like to pass on my best wishes to Rob, being under his leadership on a personal note has taken my game forward and been a pleasure to play for. To fill his shoes will be a tough job as he is tactically, in my opinion, second to none. I see this opportunity as the next step in my career, and am really excited with the chance to tackle this challenge," he added further.
