Carolyn J. Satcher
Carolyn J. Satcher, Library Technical Assistant in the Library Technical Services Department, retires this month with over 26 years of service to Dekalb College/GPC libraries.
Carolyn began working part-time at Dekalb College in July, 1986 as a Circulation Library Assistant at the Clarkston Campus library (then housed in C-building), and after 4 months she was hired full-time in that role. She assisted on the reference desk during peak periods, and also in the non-print library, then housed in Fine Arts building. During this time, Carolyn helped in the weeding of over 10,000 books that were later housed in the Plant Services building.
Carolyn received her Associate of Science Degree in Psychology here at Dekalb College in 1992, having formerly attended Talladega College. In 1993, when the new Jim Cherry LRC was opened, Carolyn was assigned to the 3rd floor, where she worked as a stacks supervisor, maintaining the microfilm and serials areas. Carolyn was later assigned to the Library Technical Services Department, where she initially supervised Non-Print students and worked in Non-Print part-time, and was responsible for Interlibrary Loan materials to/from colleges and universities all over the world. Several years later, she came to her current position as Library Technical Assistant in the acquisitions area of Library Technical Services, where she has been responsible for ordering and receiving books and media for the libraries, among other duties.
Throughout her career, Carolyn has been active in the library field and has enjoyed continuing education opportunities. She joined the Paraprofessional Resources Interest Group of the Georgia Library Association in 1995. At this time she organized a Paraprofessional Conference Group here at the Clarkston Campus for Library Paraprofessionals of Georgia. In October 1995, Carolyn received an award for her work as a paraprofessional in libraries at the annual Georgia Library Association conference. Under the Continuing Education Program here at GPC, Carolyn took courses in creative writing, floral design, and even a balloon class.
Carolyn has participated in many functions at the college. She has been a faithful volunteer for years in helping with the policemen?s annual holiday luncheon given by PRISM. Carolyn was also a member of the MLK Birthday Celebration committee for three years. Carolyn was chosen to be the Clarkston Campus Senate Representative for Academic Affairs, and has served in that capacity for the last few years.
Carolyn has a passion for writing. In particular, she enjoys writing inspirational poetry, plays, and short stories on African American life and contributions, and then subsequently reading her works to audiences. She looks forward to being published sometime in the near future. Other than writing, Carolyn?s favorite pastime is listening to her large collection of music and viewing her large collection of movies. Carolyn also enjoys singing, visiting museums and libraries, and collecting antiques. She is active in her church as a member of the Myrtice Bell Scholarship Fund (which has funded several GPC students over the years) and has been the chair of the Black History committee for almost 20 years. Carolyn loves attending social functions, especially those with her brother-in-law, former surgeon general, Dr. David Satcher. Over the years, Carolyn has personally met or seen well over 150 celebrities at social functions.
When she is not at work or enjoying her many hobbies and activities, Carolyn is busy taking care of her family. Carolyn is married to Larry Satcher, a former part-time math tutor at the Decatur campus. She is very proud of her son Larry, daughter Anna, and son-in-law Pierre, who are all college graduates. She has a grandson, and is awaiting the arrival of a granddaughter near the end of the month.
Carolyn says that Dekalb College/GPC has been a great experience for her, and that she will always be grateful for the knowledge she has received here, as well as the staff and co-workers she has worked with for the last 26 years.
