Officials in Governor Jack Markell?s administration say the increased workers compensation insurance rates approved this week are a big improvement over the original request.
But they also noted that there?s more work to do in order to reduce these premium increases.
Governor Jack Markell says he?s concerned about is the economic impact the rate increase may have on the state.
?We know how painful these increases will be for businesses and I think we made very good progress several years ago with the rewrite of the [workers compensation insurance] law. I think we?re going to have to take a continuing look at that to make sure we?re doing everything we can to protect businesses from these kinds of increases.?
Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart okayed the controversial hike Thursday ? raising some rates by as much as 19 percent.
Every business in Delaware is required to carry workers compensation insurance.
