HYDE PARK, OH (FOX19) - During a week of perfect golf weather, the Women?s Western Golf Association?s (WWGA) 86th National Junior Championship concluded play Friday at Cincinnati Country Club in Hyde Park.?
This beautiful venue provided every challenge the girls could imagine with hilly terrain and undulating greens.
Last year?s WWGA Junior Champion, Ashley Armstrong of Flossmoor, IL was unable to defend her title due to the tournament?s maximum age limit of 18.? However, as a Freshman at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN she was named ?the 2011-2012 Big East Player of the Year.
Chakansim ?Fai? Khamborn of Thailand defeated Canada?s Samantha Spencer 5 & 4.? Twelve year old Khamborn was a formidable opponent and birdied five of the last seven holes she played.? In the other Semifinal match, Morgan Nadaline, Anderson, IN was the victor over Aya Johnson, North Muskegon, MI 3 & 2.? Nadaline also had five birdies during her match setting up the battle in the afternoon for the WWGA 86th National Junior Championship.
The Championship Final Match was underway at 12:30PM.? Through the first seven holes the match was All Square, then Fai Khamborn seemed to find perfect shot execution, hitting the next seven fairways or greens.? She won each of the remaining holes and took the match over Morgan Nadaline 6 & 4.? Even Nadaline?s birdie on the par 5 ? 450 yard 11th hole couldn?t win the hole against Khamborn?s eagle.?
Fai?s father taught her to play golf using golf instruction books as a guide.? The WWGA Junior Championship was her first Match Play experience.? When asked about Match Play she said, ?I really enjoyed this format.?? Khamborn has won three Thailand Golf Association Girls Championships in her age group.
She is spending the summer in Cincinnati with her aunt and uncle for the second year in a row.? Her next tournament will be the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship the first week of August at Pinehurst, North Carolina.
