Royal silver for Team GB in eventing

Britain grabbed silver in the equestrian three-day eventing team competition on Tuesday, making Zara Phillips the first member of the British royal family to win an Olympic medal.

Her mother Princess Anne, who was in the crowds watching, competed in the 1976 Games in equestrian eventing but came away without a medal. Zara's father, Captain Mark Phillips, is a previous Olympic equestrian medallist.

Germany defended their Olympic eventing team title by a whisker from Britain with New Zealand taking bronze in the concluding jumping session at Greenwich Park.

The home favourites nabbed silver when New Zealand's final rider Mark Todd knocked a fence down while British anchor Tina Cook went clear, to the delight of the capacity 20,000 crowd including Prince William and wife Kate, Prince Harry and former British Prime Minister John Major.

"Gold would have been brilliant, silver's fantastic," Cook told the BBC.

Germany, favourites to prevail after holding the lead after the opening dressage and Monday's cross country, ended up with a total of 133.70 points, with Britain on 138.20 and New Zealand on 144.40.

Gold: Germany (Peter Thomsen, Dirk Schrade, Ingrid Klimke, Sandra Auffarth, Michael Jung)

Silver: Great Britain (Nicola Wilson, Mary King, Zara Phillips, Kristina Cook, William Fox-Pitt)

Bronze: New Zealand (Jonelle Richards, Jock Paget, Caroline Powell, Andrew Nicholson, Mark Todd)

Birth By C-Section: A Risk For Childhood Obesity? | Children's ...

From PLOS?..

Both Travis and I are at that age when our Facebook feed is becoming dominated by photos of our friends? babies; many of my close friends have added an adorable member to their family over the past few years.

A while back, my partner Marina and I watched a fascinating documentary by ex-talk show host, Ricki Lake, entitled ?The Business of Being Born.?The documentary exposes the many changes have occurred surrounding the way women give birth in US hospitals, namely the increased use of drugs and increased rates of caesarean sections ? two factors that expedite the process. Here is a small clip from the documentary which I highly recommend watching:

Although I am no expert in gynecology and obstetrics, I have long-wondered what these changes in hospital procedures can have on the health of the mother and baby. Sadly, a recent study I came across suggests that babies born by c-section are at higher risk of obesity in early childhood compared to those born vaginally.

In the study, the authors assessed a total of 1255 children at age 3 and compared the body weights and body composition of those born via c-section (284 births or 22.6%) to those born naturally.

Here?s what?s interesting: at age 3, 15.7% of children delivered by c-section were obese compared with 7.5% of children born vaginally. The obesity rates were more than doubled for c-sections!

Pittsboro - On Saturday, power-washers removed the dirt from the exterior of the building that will house the new Pittsboro Roadhouse & General Store. Indoors, managers conducted open interviews to hire wait and kitchen staff for the restaurant at 39 West Street. Greg Lewis, the restaurant's owner and operator, was looking to fill 30 available spots.

If the restaurant gets all of the required approvals and inspections, they?ll open for dinner on Friday, August 17 at 5 p.m. Table service will take place on Saturday, August 18 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The lunch menu will feature items that cost $6 and up. Dinner entrees will be run from $10 and up.

The interior is being redone and will be different. There are new walls, new floors, new colors, new lights, new server stations, new tables and chairs.

Lewis is a Pittsboro resident who?s also the chef and owner of the Cary-based Catering By Design. He bought the former General Store Caf? because he wanted to see the business back up and running again.

Lewis began working in restaurants at the age of fourteen, beginning as a busboy and progressing to restaurant manager by the end of high school. Greg has an associate degree in Culinary Art from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. His career spans more than thirty years of culinary creation and management, including over eight years as Executive Chef with establishments such as the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pennsylvania. After the hotel, he helped to open a popular upscale restaurant in the Hershey area, establishing an award-winning menu. From there, Chef Lewis went on to work as the Executive Chef for central Pennsylvania's largest caterer.

The back part of the restaurant will be similar to what it was, with a lounge and couches for people to sit and hang out. Live bands will play every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The new owners are putting in a new sound system and sound panels to improve the sound in the rear room.

Previous owners undertook the rear expansion in 2006, just before the economic downturn. The store had closed earlier this year when the former operators said they could no longer sustain the business under a debt they?d taken on for the expansion. Lewis bought the business out of bankruptcy for $10,000, and settled leases on some of the kitchen, music and computer equipment.

The former Chevrolet dealership, converted in the late ?70s to a market, restaurant and music venue, was in a state of disarray after months of disuse.

A randomized trial of DHA intake during infancy: School readiness and receptive vocabulary at 2-3.5years of age.

Early Hum Dev. 2012 Jul 24;

Authors: Drover JR, Felius J, Hoffman DR, Casta?eda YS, Garfield S, Wheaton DH, Birch EE

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in infant formula on language development yield conflicting results. No study to date has investigated the effects of DHA in infant formula on school readiness. AIM: To determine the effects of different dietary concentrations of DHA provided during the first 12months of life on language development and school readiness. DESIGN: This was a double-masked, randomized, controlled, prospective trial. A total of 182 infants were enrolled at 1-9days of age and assigned randomly to receive infant formula with one of four levels of DHA: control (0% DHA), 0.32% DHA, 0.64% DHA, or 0.96% DHA. All formulas with DHA also contained 0.64% arachidonic acid. One hundred forty-one children completed the 12-month feeding trial and were eligible for this study. Consent was obtained from 131 participants. School readiness was assessed at 2.5years using the Bracken Basic Concept Scale-Revised (BBCS-R) and receptive vocabulary was assessed at 2 and 3.5years using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Third Edition (PPVT-III). RESULTS: There were no diet group differences on any of the BBCS-R subscales. On the PPVT-III, the control group had higher raw scores and standard scores than both the 0.32% and 0.96% groups at 2years of age. These differences were not evident at 3.5years. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary DHA during the first year of life did not enhance school readiness or language development. Children who consumed infant formula with 0.32% and 0.96% DHA showed lower receptive vocabulary scores than controls at 2 but not 3.5years of age.

Changes in Online Video Marketing Strategies

?

As the online and offline worlds con?tinue to evolve and inter?act, mar?keters con?tinue to seek advice and data to ratio?nal?ize the choices they make about what kind of con?tent to pop?u?late their web?sites with. ?When con?sid?er?ing online video mar?ket?ing for your busi?ness, review the evi?dence below, that shows you can increase sales and con?ver?sion rates, drive more traf?fic to your site, reduce ser?vic?ing costs, make a?strong con?nec?tion between on and offline mar?ket?ing efforts, and per?haps most impor?tantly, build long-??term rela?tion?ships with your cus?tomers. ?That said, one caveat to a?suc?cess?ful online media strat?egy is that qual?ity of con?tent and strate?gic deploy?ment of online video mar?ket?ing material.

Online Video Mar?ket?ing: Qual?ity Matters

  • Video pro?duced by a?pro?fes?sional ad agency, and opti?mized cor?rectly dri?ves 30% more traf?fic than user-??generated video (Source:?Com?score).

Increase Your Con?ver?sion Rate & Rev?enue Per?Sale

  • Web?site vis?i?tors who review prod?uct and ser?vice infor?ma?tional videos dur?ing the course of their visit are 85% more likely to make a?pur?chase than vis?i?tors who do not encounter video con?tent (Source:?Inter?net Retailer).
  • Major Inter?net retail?ers and ser?vice providers report con?ver?sion rate increases from 6???44% for prod?ucts that are sup?ported by online video infor?ma?tion (Source:?ReelSEO).
  • A recent Inter?net Retailer study showed that 52% of online shop?pers said they feel more con?fi?dent about mak?ing a?pur?chase after watch?ing a?video about prod?ucts they are con?sid?er?ing. ?When a?video is pre?sented prop?erly, and con?tains the appro?pri?ate amount of infor?ma?tion, over two-??thirds of con?sumers will watch a?video twice.
  • Retail sites with video increase the aver?age sale rev?enue by 13% (Source:?L2 Spe?cialty Retail Report).

Drive More Traf?fic To Your Site With Online Video Marketing

  • When opti?mized cor?rectly, video con?tent increases the like?li?hood of a?first page Google search result by 53 times (Source:?For?rester).
  • Video con?tent search results appear in 70% of the top 100 list?ings, which are the most com?monly dis?played results for uni?ver?sal or blended queries (Source:?Mar?ket?ing?week).

Reduce Cus?tomer Ser?vice?Costs

  • Major online brands includ?ing Dell and Vir?gin Mobile report a?reduc?tion in ser?vice call vol?ume by 5???10% as a?result of incor?po?rat?ing instruc?tional, and prod?uct infor?ma?tion videos on their web?sites (Source:?The Aus?tralian).
  • Online retail?ers have also found that strate?gi?cally adding online video to sup?port prod?ucts has reduced prod?uct returns at a?rate between 10???25% (Source:?Inter?net Retailer).

Con?nect The Offline World With The Online World

  • Lead?ing CPG firms have found that online video cor?re?lates with a?6% increase in brick-??and-??mortar store sales (Source:?Nielsen).

  • Nearly 50% of online shop?pers in the United States con?ducted research on prod?ucts or ser?vices in store, or on loca?tion, before return?ing to home or work to make a?pur?chase online (Source:?eMar?keter).

Build Rela?tion?ships With Your Customers

  • Online video mar?ket?ing com?po?nents drive increased pur?chase intent by nearly 1.25%, and are more than four time more effec?tive than Flash con?tent (Source:?Dou?bleClick)
  • View?ers favored a?brand 2% more when exposed to online video ads, as opposed to just 0.15% for ads with just Flash ani?ma?tion (Source:?Dou?bleClick)
  • Con?sumers are increas?ingly cor?re?lat?ing their expec?ta?tions for online shop?ping expe?ri?ences with that of their expe?ri?ence in brick-??and-??mortar stores. ?Oppor?tu?ni?ties to build brand affin?ity, and cus?tomer loy?alty online with online video are increas?ingly impor?tant to the suc?cess of on and offline busi?ness models.

Use Video To Gen?er?ate Social Media?Buzz

tea and pot in ancient China

Tang-era pot showing Islamic influences; possibly used for tea

About a thousand years ago in present-day Afghanistan, the Islamic scholar al-B?r?n? described tea and pot in his?Book of Pharmacy.? Some of al-B?r?n??s notes on tea:

  • tea (chai) is a Chinese word for a herb drunk with hot water
  • tea grows at high altitudes in China and Nepal
  • the Chinese desiccate tea leaves and store them in a cube-shaped container; they also make tea tablets
  • white tea is the most excellent variety of tea, but also difficult to find; varieties of tea, from the rarest to the most commonly available, are white, green, violet, grey, and black teas
  • tea is important medicine: tea purges bile through the gastrointestinal system (a cholagogue), negates effects of liquor, purifies the blood, and abates fevers [1]

Al-B?r?n? also preserved a traveler?s description of the economy of tea and pot in China:

the king of China resides in the city of Yanj?.? A big river like the Tigris traverses through this city.? Both sides of the river are studded with wine sellers? tenements, kilns, and shops.? People flock there to drink tea, and do not take Indian cannabis clandestinely.? The king of the place receives the capitation tax, and the public cannot transact the sale of tea, since both tea and wine are the possession of the king.? He who transacts business in salt and tea without the king being aware of it is awarded the punishment due to a thief.? And the people there slay the thief and eat his flesh.? Profits from such places go to the coffers of the king and such profits equal those accruing from gold and silver mines. [2]

This text probably describes the major Chinese city Yangzhou, which is on the banks of the Yangtze River.[3]? Arab and Persian merchants were living in Yangzhou in the eighth century.? That the Chinese king earned high revenue by controlling trade in tea, wine, and salt is probable. ? That?s particularly probable for tea because it was a popular, attractive product: people flocked to Yangzhou to drink tea.

What about the observation that people ?do not take Indian cannabis clandestinely??? A variety of cannabis (pot), called Cannabis indica, is native to India.? Cannabis has been consumed in India for thousands of years.?? Cannabis use in India, however, seems to have been associated with sacred festivals.? Al-B?r?n??s description suggests that, unlike in India, pot in China was consumed popularly like tea.

[1] Based on trans. Ahmad & Said (1973) pp. 105-6.

[2] Id. p. 105.? The Chinese drank a wine made from rice.? An Arab travel account from about 850 preserves a similar description:

The {Chinese} Emperor also reserves to himself the revenues which arise from the salt mines, and from a certain herb which they drink with hot water, and of which great quantities are sold in all the cities, to the amount of great sums.? They call it Sah (Chah / Chai), and it is a shrub more bushy than the pomegranate-tree, but it has a kind of bitterness with it.? Their way is to boil water, which they pour upon this leaf, and this drink cures all sort of diseases.? Whatever sums are lodged in the Treasury arise from the poll tax, and the duties upon salt and upon this leaf.

Trans. Renaudot (1733) p. 25 (capitalization modernized).? In the mid-eighth century, the Chinese writer Lu Yu wrote a monograph on tea, The Classic of Tea.? That work also suggests that tea was highly popular in China.

[3] Another possible location is Guangzhou, which is on the banks of the Pearl River.? Arab and Persian merchants also resided in Guangzhou in the eighth century.? However, the reference to Yanj? seems phonetically closer to Yangzhou.

The Vegan Mouse: Baked Pasta with Veggies and Sausage.

This was a "use what you got" recipe where I wanted to use what was in my fridge and pantry. I loosely based this off of the pastitsio recipe from The Olive and The Caper cookbook. Mine has no dairy and no eggs. It's damn good too. It's layered with veggies, vegan sausage, tomato sauce and topped with a creamy vegan bechamel sauce. It is TASTY.

Recipe:

4 TB olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large zucchini, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
a small 1/2 head of broccoli, chopped, stems and all
2 Tofurky tomato and basil flavor veggie sausages, chopped
1 tsp oregano
1 jar Trader Joe's Tomato Basil Marinara
1 lb. macaroni, penne or ziti pasta
1/2 cup to 1 cup Daiya vegan cheese

For bechamel sauce:
3 TB Earth Balance margarine or other non dairy margarine
3 TB white flour
1 1/2 cups plain almond milk
1/4 tsp. salt
pinch of nutmeg

1. Cook pasta according to package directions. I cooked mine for about 10 minutes.
2. While pasta is cooking, saute the veggies in olive oil over medium heat until veggies are almost tender. Add oregano, sausage and continue cooking until veggies are tender. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350 F.
3. Make the bechamel sauce: Heat the margarine in a pot until melted over medium high heat. Add flour and start whisking until it gets smooth and creamy. Slowly add the almond milk and keep whisking. Keep on medium heat and whisk until thick and creamy about 12 minutes.
4. While you are making the bechamel sauce, the pasta will be done. Drain the pasta in a colander. Pour a bit of olive oil into the empty pasta pot and then add the drained pasta back in along with the cooked veggies/sausage. Stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.
5. Spread about 1/2 cup of tomato sauce along the bottom of a large greased baking dish. Pour a third of pasta mixture over it and then add more marinara on top. Repeat with a couple more pasta layers and marinara sauce. At the end, whisk the bechamel sauce again and then pour over the top of the pasta. Sprinkle with Daiya cheese and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes with foil on top. After 30 minutes, remove foil and bake uncovered for 15 to 20 more minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for at least 15 minutes prior to serving.

Skaters, Supplements & Steroids Recreational Skaters Beware of ...

Recent research revealed several top brands of common sports supplements contain controlled or banned substances that may compromise the long-term health of athletes.

Skaters and other athletes are often tested for drugs before or after wins at major international competitions. Few of the hundreds are accused, and those often swear that they havent taken anything illegal. Still, their rebuttals are met with scrutiny and punishment. Perhaps the only thing these athletes are guilty of is trusting disreputable pharmaceutical companies who produce tainted nutritional supplements.

Their plight sends a warning to the public, to consumers who use unregulated nutritional supplements as part of their nutritional routine. Many of these customers are speed skaters and figure skaters who skate for the health benefits of the sports. Could they be sabotaging their health by taking tainted vitamins, protein powders and supplements?

Product Regulation

Sportspeople take nutritional supplements to increase strength, endurance, shirt as roma, and overall fitness. Unfortunately in the US, dietary boosters are not regulated for ingredients, claims or purity. Even though all ingredients are supposed to be listed on the products container, kids football kits, often these lists are incorrect or incomplete because manufacturers advertently omit banned substances that make their product seem more effective.

The IOC approves for use only a small number of supplements from manufacturers whose labs adhere to strict protocols. Supplements are otherwise not regulated because they are not considered food items. Even regular daily vitamins are questionable in their contents. For example, most ?Vitamin C? sold at regular markets contains little or no soluble vitamin C. Brief disclaimers or careful semantics are all these companies need to avoid lawsuits. Likewise, some over-the-counter protein powders and amino acid formulas contain trace amounts of stimulants and steroids.

Its difficult to ask for more regulation of substances since such requests will undoubtedly by met with loss of consumer rights. For example, the US natural herbs industry has for years been on the brink of losing to government control so that no herbs or vitamins can be purchased without a prescription. Citizens want to make sure the products they take are safe and pure, but they dont want the government dictating what health-improving medicinals they can or cant choose to put in their bodies.

Product Safety

Some manufacturers are now taking steps to assure consumers that their products are safe for general consumption as well as for talented athletes whose world class standings could otherwise be compromised.

First, trustworthy companies follow specific guidelines when manufacturing supplements. Termed: ?Good Manufacturing Practices,? these strict guidelines were set forth by the International Olympic Committee and the United States Anti-Drug Administration.

Extensive tests, irish funny t shirts, such as GC/MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a method of testing supplements for drugs,) are expensive. These costs roll down to consumers. Quality, safe and pure products are usually very expensive but offer much higher quality than their less expensive counterparts.

Athletes should expect to spend more to make sure the products they consume are free of stimulants, retro football shirts uk, hormones, and other banned substances. An extensive list of prohibited ingredients is updated on the World Anti-Doping Agency website.

Testing and Results

USADA 2007 third-quarter testing of athletes revealed only 4 violations out of nearly 2,000 tests. (Individual alleged anti-doping violations are posted on www.usantidoping.org.) Perhaps these numbers reveal that regulations and nutritional recommendations are being followed by professional athletes regardless of questionable manufacturing practices. Unfortunately, the general public remains uninformed that the products they trust their health to may be harming them.

Nearly 25% of the popular dietary supplements recently tested by Informed-Choice, a group of manufacturers, contained traces of steroids and other banned substances. Names of these best-selling brands havent been released for legal reasons. This should send a cautionary reminder to figure skaters and speedskaters who use dietary supplements as a part of their daily training regimen. Buy quality products from reputable companies and direct distributors. Discount store ?bargain? supplements may be giving you more than you bargained for.

Japan stun Spain in Olympic football

Japan scored a stunning upset of world champions Spain on Thursday in the Olympic football tournament as officials played down a flag blunder which prompted a protest from North Korea.

The greatest sporting show on earth will officially get under way on Friday, when around 80,000 VIPs and spectators will flock to the Olympic Stadium for an opening ceremony staged by Oscar-winning British movie director Danny Boyle.

However the sporting action kicked off with the opening matches of the women's football tournament at venues across Britain on Wednesday, and on Thursday it was the men's turn to take centre-stage.

While hosts Britain were due to face Senegal, it was Japan who provided the story of the day with a remarkable 1-0 win over a talented Spanish side aiming to add Olympic gold to their World Cup and Euro crowns.

Yuki Otsu was the hero for the Japanese, prodding home on 34 minutes to secure a victory which evoked memories of Japan's famous 1-0 win over Brazil in the Olympic tournament in 1996.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge meanwhile sought to draw a line under the gaffe which prompted North Korea's protest ahead of their game with Colombia on Wednesday.

The North Koreans were furious after their players were introduced on an electronic screen alongside an image of the South Korean flag.

"This was an honest mistake, honestly made," Cameron said. "An apology's been made and I'm sure every step will be taken to make sure these things don't happen again. We shouldn't inflate this episode. It was unfortunate, it shouldn't have happened, and I think we can leave it at that."

Rogge said the incident was "most unfortunate" but was confident there would be no repeat.

Meanwhile two of the likely superstars of the Olympics -- USA swimmer Michael Phelps and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt -- stoked anticipation for the sporting action looming over the next fortnight with separate press briefings. It was standing room only at a press conference involving Phelps, winner of a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games four years ago, and several of his USA team-mates.

"I'm excited. I'm here to swim as fast as I can. If I do that everything else will fall into place," said Phelps, who needs only three medals during the London Games to become the most decorated Olympian in history.

Bolt, the defending 100m and 200m champion and world record holder over both distances, was due to make his first public appearance since his arrival in Britain in a tightly controlled press conference at a London hotel.

Bolt has had a troubled build-up, losing to compatriot Yohan Blake twice in the Jamaican trials and suffering a "slight injury" which forced his withdrawal from a meeting in Monaco last week.

Four other athletes meanwhile were coming to terms with the news that their Olympic campaigns were already over after being kicked out of the games for doping offences.

Turkish weightlifters Fatih Baydar and Ibrahim Arat and Greek world indoor high jump champion Dimitris Chondrokoukis were suspended after failing drugs tests while Hungarian discus thrower Zoltan Kovago was ousted after refusing to undergo a doping control.

Bursting blue termites spew toxic goo

One species of termite sends its older workers on suicide missions armed with explosive blue "backpacks."

When grabbed by another termite, a predator or a person with tweezers, these backpack-sporting termites, which the researchers call blue workers, rupture and spew a toxic, sticky substance, scientists have found.

The unfortunate workers from this species of tropical termite, Neocapritermes taracua, have two bluish spots visible on the backs of their abdomens. These spots contain crystals made of a copper-containing protein stored in two external "backpack" pouches, write the researchers.

The crystals react with the salivary gland secretions stored in their abdomens to create a droplet of toxic goo that can kill or paralyze worker termites from another species, Labiotermes labralis, an experiment revealed. [ Video of Exploding Suicide Termites ]

    1. 'Maiden' Inca mummy had lung infection

The so-called Maiden mummy of a 15-year-old Incan girl who was sacrificed 500 years ago is giving up some secrets, revealing the teenager suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death, scientists report Wednesday.

    2. Scared of spiders? Well, brace yourself...

    4. Ancient life-size lion statues baffle scientists

So-called white workers also have the salivary secretions but lack the blue crystals. These workers are less aggressive, slower to burst in battle and the substance they produce is not as effective against their enemies.

The researchers transplanted the crystals from blue workers onto white workers, and found the white workers became more deadly once they had the crystals.??

They also determined that the blue workers were older by measuring the length of the edge of the termites' mandibles. Termites chew on wood and as they age their mandibles wear down. The larger the blue crystals on a termite, the more blunt its mandibles, the researchers found.

Among social insects like termites, the practice of sending older workers into battle is common, researcher Yves Roisin of Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium said in a podcast interview released by the journal Science, where this research is detailed.

"(Among) such insects of course the individual doesn't really count or it counts by the work it can actually do for the colony, and when they are old and probably less efficient they are more likely to sacrifice themselves," Roisin said.

However, the blue workers' suicide gear is highly unusual in the world of insect warfare, because the combination of blue crystals and salivary secretions make it a two-component system, Roisin said, adding that it is also exceptional that one component (the crystals) is carried outside of the body.

So far, the researchers have seen this behavior in this species only, but they hope to see if its relatives do something similar, he said.

The research will appear in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

The difference between vintage and antique furniture | Home Design ...

There is a very blurred dividing line between the concepts of vintage and antique furniture. Top antique dealers generally believe that antique furniture must be at least a century old, an interpretation known as the "100-year rule". Everything else is either vintage or collectible.

But many antique stores sell a 1930s Art Deco table as an "antique", but in another part of the store, sell a 1930s Schiaparelli gown as vintage. Some purists claim the word "vintage" should only apply to wine. Over the last decade the term "retro", meaning the period 1950s to 1970s, has become confused with "vintage".

A solution to this conundrum is to concentrate on craftsmanship, rather than the 100-year rule. True antiques should be entirely handmade. Machinery was not introduced into furniture making until the 1860s. Automatic processes meant that furniture could be produced with precision straight lines and identical components.

A true antique will have components such as handles, knobs, rungs and spindles - that should be identical - of slightly different shapes and sizes. Handcrafting cannot produce identical pieces or perfect symmetry in the manner of a machine. Even the best reproduction furniture is easily recognised because it will have equal dimensions and symmetry.

The drawers in any item of furniture give some of the best clues about its age. Joints in drawers that have been dovetailed by hand will not be equal. When a carpenter made the original antique items, the planes, drawknives and spokeshaves that were his tools would have left marks and nicks on the inside of panels and drawers.

The type of wood used for the furniture provides other pointer. Oak was the main wood used in Europe until around 1700. Walnut came into use during the reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). It was very popular during the short reign (1702 -1714) of their daughter Queen Anne. Not all Queen Anne chairs were made of walnut, but it`s a good rule to assume that most were.

Mahogany was introduced during the later part of Queen Anne`s reign and remained popular over the following centuries. Cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1789) always used mahogany for his furniture. The colonial period from the late 18th century onwards witnessed the introduction of different indigenous hardwoods from Asia and South America as well maple from North America.

Finer pine furniture in Britain had been made since the Middle Ages from wood imported from Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. At the beginning of the 20th century, carpenters began importing exotic walnut woods, kingwoods and zebrawoods to use as veneers.

The finish on a piece of furniture also gives clues to its age. Shellac - an insect resin dissolved in ethyl alcohol - was the only finish used on furniture until Victorian times. Successive coats of shellac were used for sealing and sanding wood until the surface acquired a very glossy finish. Very old furniture - pre-1700 - may be sealed and finished with oil and wax. Lacquers and varnishes were introduced after the 1860s.

If you are lucky enough to have identified a glorious piece of Chippendale, avoid hiding it in a period setting. Place it by a window next to modern Venetian blinds to give a stunning effect.
