Technology is getting bigger and better. Meaning that more people are using technology to complete day to day tasks. A great example of this is the internet! When was the last time you looked in the phone book for a plumber, electrician or anything else! Exactly, you probably used the internet.

So as a business, if you are not on the internet, then you could be turning away thousands of potential customers per day and you don?t even know it!

But don?t worry. Getting on the internet does not require a PHD. Here are some basics of getting online.

The first thing that you are going to need is a domain name. A domain name is the thing people type in to an internet browser to bring up your website. IE EzineArticles.com.

You can get domain name that have different ?extensions? By this I mean.com,.co.uk,.info etc. Its the bit on the end. The most popular, and well know one is.com. You can register a domain name through a registrar, or your web hosting company (which we will come on to). You would usually pay per year for your domain name.

Your website name makes up part of your brand identity, so try to make sure that it relates to your business as much as possible.

So once you have set up your domain name, you now need space on the internet to host the files of your website. You do this by renting space on servers from a web hosting company. When somebody types your domain into the internet, it will show the files that are stored.

With most hosting companies, you will also get other features such as e-mail accounts, site builders, sub domains etc.

It would also be a good idea to set up e-mail as well. The e-mail address that you will have will include your domain name. So if you domain name is: http:// www. adomain . com Your e-mail may look something like: name @ adomain. com

This looks much better, and much more professional than say: name 876 @ hotmail. com

OK, so that is the basics set up! You would now be ready to get your website up and running.

Now there are various ways of building a website. Some are more complicated than others. Not to worry though, if you do not know much about website building, choose a hosting company that includes a free website builder. I will put a link in the resource box to a company that offers a free site builder.

The site builder will do all the hard work you! You don?t need to worry about uploading files to your server or anything like that.

Now if you do know how to build a website, using a HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, than you will know that it is simply a case of uploading all the files that make up your website, inducing images to your server. To make your website live, you will need to name your home page as ?index.html? This means that when somebody goes to your domain, that page is displayed.

In conclusion, I think it is a good move for any business to get online. More and more people are using the internet today for basics tasks such as looking for a plumbing, or maybe a takeaway. What puts a lot of people off, is them thinking that having a website will cost an arm and a leg. But these days you get your entire website online for a lot less that you think!
