HOME'S COOL - Life Without School - Entry #877

Shawn - 37, Husband, Dad, Breadwinner, Tattoo Artist, Body Piercer, Business Owner, Saltwater Aquarium Enthusiast, Cook, Mr. Fix-It.

Nance - 38, Wife, Homeschooling Mom, Bookworm, Writer, Field Tripper, List Maker, Planner, Chauffeur, Oak Meadow Enthusiast.

Melissa - 19, Attends Special Needs School/Life Skills Class, participates in Special Olympics sports (usually basketball and softball). Likes music, movies, shopping, and letter-writing.

Alexa - 10, Left public school toward the end of 3rd grade in March of 2009 and has been home since, homeschooling with Oak Meadow. Enjoys reading, arts and crafts, her Nintendo DS, bike riding, Girl Scouts, Judo, her book club and being with friends.

Ben - 5, Has never been to any outside school. We've been doing informal preschool to date and are starting Oak Meadow Kindergarten this fall. Enjoys computer, video and board games, silly jokes, playdough, soccer, teeball, rough-housing, and occasional cuddling and reading.

We are a secular/Jewish, relaxed/eclectic homeschooling family, living in Pennsylvania and thoroughly enjoying Life Without School!

CURRENT CURRICULUM/MATERIALS

This fall, Alexa will be using: Oak Meadow 6 Ancient Civilizations and English; Oak Meadow Basic Life Science; Story of the World Volume One, Ancient Times; Teaching Textbooks Math 6; Story Grammar for Elementary School; and Getting Started With Spanish (as she wants to try to learn Spanish). She will also be using kid's typing software and learning to cook using Rachael Ray's Cooking Rocks! cookbook.

Ben will be using the Oak Meadow Kindergarten curriculum and Funnix beginning reading lessons.

(So why does my blog say "Life Without School" if I use all this curriculum stuff? 1) Because Alexa used to go to public school and now she doesn't. And 2) Because I'm a pretty relaxed homeschooler. We do school around life, not life around school. And
3) Because we use a fun, hands on curriculum that isn't overly time consuming and isn't dry or textbookish, and we're always willing to drop it for the time being if something fun or interesting comes up.
