It's March Madness and then some.
While the rest of the country obsesses over college basketball, South Florida is about to embark on its own sports spring-tacular that is too big to contain with a single month or set of rules.
Beginning with Thursday's unexpected appetizer of Lin-sanity at the Heat-Knicks game and culminating with the grand opening of the Marlins
Get your Marlins Tickets now!' retractable-roof ballpark in Miami on national television on April 4, the region can claim a six-week run as the epicenter of sports.
The calendar is jammed with world-class events that will showcase South Florida to national and international audiences watching many top athletes and players vie on assorted courts, turf and dirt.
"It's the season for sports and bragging rights in South Florida," said Kathleen Davis, of the Sport Management Research Institute, which analyzes sports and entertainment trends and economic impact.
The region has been serving this multi-sport smorgasbord for years, but the platter is overflowing with more delectable treats this time with the Marlins' opening their $515 million showpiece and Tiger Woods entered in The Honda Classic for the first time as a pro.
The menu cuts across a wide swath of interests. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will continue their struggle for tennis supremacy at Key Biscayne, Kentucky Derby hopefuls will jockey for position at Gulfstream Park in the Florida Derby and equestrians will jump for spots on the U.S. Olympic team at Wellington, which also has one of the premier polo events, the USPA Piaget Gold Cup. There is also a major diving meet in Fort Lauderdale.
Meanwhile, the Heat is the hottest team in the NBA and the Florida Panthers are making their strongest run for the NHL playoffs in a dozen years.
"The quality of the venues has continued to improve and the types of events that are attracted to the region continues to improve. That underscores how South Florida continues to become well recognized for event staging and welcoming visitors to the region," Davis said. "It's all good for tourism."
It's a bonanza for sports fans with specific or diverse interests. Golf aficionados get back-to-back weeks of Woods' quest to regain prominence, in the Honda (March 1-4) and the WGC-Cadillac Championships at Doral (March 8-11).
"I think it gives South Florida fans a tremendous opportunity to see one of the world's most recognizable athletes, and someone who has been playing pretty well right now," Eddie Carbone, executive director of the WGC-Cadillac event. "It's a neat time in golf."
Tennis fanatics have two solid weeks of the top-ranked 78 men's and 76 women's players in the Sony Ericsson Open at Key Biscayne. The horse crowd has five weeks left to get their fill of show-jumping in the Winter Equestrian Festival.
What about those with more varied tastes? Here's a week-by-week sample platter of highlights: Pick two each week.
Sunday-March 3: Delray Beach International Tennis Championships; Nations Cup Equestrian; Wendy Wyland Dive Meet.
March 4-10: Honda Classic (final day); Marlins exhibitions at new park vs. University of Miami or FIU; Gulfstream Park Handicap.
March 11-17: WGC-Cadillac Championship (final day); Bruins at Panthers.
March 18-25: Magic at Heat; Sony Ericsson tennis; U.S. Olympic equestrian trials.
March 25-31: Florida Derby; polo Gold Cup final; Sony Ericsson Open women's final.
April 1-4: Sony Ericsson Open men's final; Marlins-Yankees exhibitions; Marlins season opener.
(Note: Marlins-Yankees exhibitions are sold out, and tickets for the season opener against the Cardinals are only available to season-ticket packages and through a limited lottery, but there's always the resale market.)
Trying to attend all of those events could break the family budget. But many of them can be seen for free on television.
The golf and tennis events, for instance, will showcase South Florida to national and international TV audiences, much to the delight of tourism interests.
How those images of sun-splashed playing fields with elite athletes and celebrity spectators translate to attracting visitors is difficult to pinpoint, but Davis said it carries benefits beyond a marketing campaign because "it's not paid for, which is even better because it looks more credible."
The economic impact of all of these events is also difficult to assess, she said. Unlike Super Bowls, which bring in the majority of attendees from outside the host region, many spectators at the spring events are local residents.
But there is a significant infusion of outside money from events such as the Sony Ericsson Open and Winter Equestrian Festival. The latter has riders and horses from 30 countries and 49 states competing, and the Sony Ericsson draws many spectators from South America and Europe. Last year it sold out its 348 travel packages, and 14,000 hotel room nights were booked directly through the tournament.
"It's an exciting time in South Florida. I think that the timing is good with the economy seeming to pick up steam and the stock market doing well," Davis said. "The local teams are doing well, and particularly with the new home for the Marlins, it all bodes well for the community."
With the University of Miami men's and women's basketball teams bidding for tickets to the NCAA's Big Dance, South Florida may have a hand in that other bit of March Madness as well.
