College Degrees No Longer Required For Good Middle Class Jobs ...

college degree not required jobs

By Jessica Stillman

It's a scary world out there for young people looking to start their careers, and this has led to plenty of college education panic. Don't have a degree, say a host of hyperventilating pundits and extremely anxious parents, and you'll almost certainly be consigned to low-paid wage slavery and a stunted life. Weep, weep.

And while the data certainly show a large and growing gap between the earnings of those with a four-year degree and those without, and no one would argue with your worthy high school guidance counselor's advice that it's generally a good idea to go to college, all this hand-wringing can have the side effect of suggesting ALL IS LOST if somehow getting a bachelor's degree failed to work out for you.

Not so, says a recent study from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce and Civic Enterprises. The research found that despite the obvious erosion of many traditional routes to middle-class earnings for non-graduates (nope, I wouldn't bet on that factory re-opening in town), there are still 29 million jobs in America that pay middle-class wages (defined here as between $35,000 and $75,000 annually) that don't require a bachelor's degree. Forty percent of those pay more than $50,000 a year. (For New Yorkers and inveterate high achievers, $50,000 might not sound like a lot, but it beats the U.S. median.)

While in the past, blue-collar gigs were the route to the middle class for non-graduates, this study reveals that most of today's jobs for non-grads are now in service sectors like healthcare or white-collar office jobs.

So how do you find your way to one of these reasonably decent jobs if you missed the boat on college? The research suggests getting one of these gigs still takes some effort, with the center suggesting five paths to this sort of steady employment:

  • Associate's degrees. Half of associate's degrees are related to career-oriented fields, such as nursing, business, and information technology.

  • Postsecondary certificates have eclipsed associate's and master's degrees as the second most common post-secondary award after the bachelor's degree-about 1 million are awarded each year.

  • Registered apprenticeships. Nine out of 10 apprentices are men and more than half of apprenticeships are in construction.

  • Industry-based certifications such as Microsoft, Cisco, and CompTIA certifications are test-based postsecondary credentials awarded by employers.

  • Employer-based training represents the largest pathway at $454 billion of spending.

Of course, while it's great to get some counterweight to the general cultural gloom hanging over those who fail to make it out of a four-year college program, the authors of the study don't think enough is being done to help those who need to find a non-college route to a good job.

"Compared to other advanced economies, the United States under-invests in sub-baccalaureate, career and technical education," said Anthony P. Carnevale, the Center's Director and the report's lead author.

What do you think? Can you get just as good of a job even if you don't go to college?

Missner Group Facilitates 255 KSF Construction Project for Furniture ...

September 25, 2012

By Keith Loria, Contributing Editor

Jess Knigge, The Missner Group?s vice president

The Missner Group completed an approximate $900,000 design-build tenant improvement project totaling 254,535 square feet on behalf of Leggett & Platt Fashion Bed in Bedford Park, Ill.

Fashion Bed?s new warehouse facility is located on a 14.6-acre site within the Bedford Park Business Center at 6755 W. 65th St. in the southwest suburb of Chicago.

?Bedford Park has long been a strong industrial submarket,? Jess Knigge, The Missner Group?s vice president, told Commercial Property Executive. ?Fashion Bed will utilize this 254,000-square-foot warehouse area as a distribution facility for beds and headboards for their consumer products group.?

Leggett & Platt Fashion Bed is owned by Leggett & Platt Consumer Products Group, a furniture supplier that deals in beds, headboards and other bed products. The company consolidated several facilities to relocate to the new warehouse, and now occupy 75 percent of the space.

Because Fashion Bed required an occupancy date of Aug. 15, the project needed to be completed in just 10 weeks, and the Missner Group was able to meet the tight deadline thanks to a tremendous amount of expedited collaboration that was done by all parties in the deal.

?Our construction group made this possible. We had a great project team,? Knigge said. The landlord (Principal Global Investors), tenant, the landlord?s broker (NAI Hiffman) and tenant?s broker (CIBCO Realty Corp), architect (Interior Design Group Ltd), and design-build contractor (The Missner Group) all understood the tight time frame. Decisions were made promptly and we received a prompt review from the municipality for construction permit issuance.?

The lease was executed in mid-May, construction commenced on June 1, and occupancy was received in the first week of August.

?Renovations to the warehouse included the build-out of 10,620 square feet of corporate offices, 4,000 square feet of shipping and warehouse offices and upgraded lighting throughout the space,? Knigge added. ?By doing the project on a design-build basis we were able to facilitate all preconstruction endeavors as well as manage the budget from start to finish, which enabled us to complete the project efficiently and cost-effectively for Fashion Bed.?

The property now features 26 docks, three drive-in doors and 30-foot clear ceilings.

Glen Missner was the principal who oversaw the project and Knigge was the firm?s project executive. Larry Much, SIOR of NAI Hiffman represented Fashion Bed in the new lease at the Bedford Park facility. Architectural services were provided by The Interior Design Group LTD.

No. 11 ND beats No. 18 Michigan, 13-6

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? No crazy comebacks this year by Michigan against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish didn't even let Denard Robinson and the Wolverines get into the end zone this year.

Manti Te'o had two interceptions as the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish picked off five Michigan passes and forced a fumble and backup quarterback Tommy Rees sparked the Notre Dame offense in a 13-6 win over the Wolverines Saturday night.

"A great team win for our guys," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "Defensively what can I say? Six turnovers, limited who we felt is one of the most dynamic offensive players in the country to no touchdowns. Just an incredible performance by our defense."

Robinson, who amassed 948 yards of total offense in victories over the Irish past two years, wasn't as effective this time around as the Irish repeatedly forced him into mistakes. He threw four interceptions in the first half, then lost a fumble at the Notre Dame 8 on the first drive of the second half.

The Irish (4-0) are off to their best start since 2002 and took another step in trying to re-establish themselves as a college football power. It was a setback for Michigan (2-2), which lost its eighth straight road game against ranked teams since beating second-ranked Notre Dame 47-21 in 2006.

The victory ended a streak of three straight games in which Michigan beat the Irish with a score in the final 27 seconds.

"As much as we would have liked to have executed better on offense, give Michigan a lot of credit," Kelly said. "They did a very good job defensively, and we knew we were going to be in for this kind of close, tough, hard-nosed football game, and proud of the way our guys pulled it off."

Robinson apologized to Michigan fans, saying it was the worst game of his career.

"It won't happen no more. I'm going to be accountable for the rest of the season. I don't want to feel like this no more. In the 22 years I've been living, this is the most disappointed I've ever been in myself," he said.

Robinson finished 13-of-24 passing for 138 yards and also rushed for 90 yards on 26 carries.

"The key to stopping Robinson, the key to stopping such a dynamic player like Denard is everybody has to get to him," Te'o said. "Denard will start running one way and then totally cut back the other way. Everybody has to get to the ball. You have to really emphasize 11 guys to the ball."

The victory belonged to the Irish defenders, who held an opponent without a touchdown for a second straight week. Many fans at just the second night game in 22 years at Notre Dame Stadium wore leis to show support for Te'o, a Hawaiian whose girlfriend and grandmother recently died. He finished with eight tackles.

"I can't thank the students and just the fan base around the world, Notre Dame and non-Notre Dame fans. They've been really great," Te'o said.

Notre Dame ran out the clock after a 31-yard Brendan Gibbons field goal with 3:27 left in the game cut Notre Dame's lead to 13-6. Rees, who came in for an ineffective Everett Golson midway through the second quarter, connected with Tyler Eifert on a 38-yard pass down the sideline on a critical third down. Then an 8-yard run by Theo Riddick on third-and-8 with a minute left salted the game away.

"It's a great feeling any time you can beat Michigan," Rees said. "It's a great environment ... a lot of fun."

Twice, Notre Dame held Michigan without points from the Irish 10-yard line. Michigan coach Brady Hoke said he never considered pulling Robinson.

"The guy has done a pretty dog gone good job being a quarterback at Michigan and made some good throws in the first half. You know, just better decision making and move forward. What are you going to do, sit there and talk about each one of them? You've got to move forward," Hoke said.

Te'o said it felt great to finally beat Michigan and Robinson.

"He's gotten me the past two years and Michigan has gotten me three years total. I am just glad on my last hurrah I finally have something to celebrate about," he said.

12 killed in Shiite-Sunni clashes in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Twelve fighters were killed in northern Yemen on Saturday in ongoing clashes between Shiite tribesmen allied with the country's former leader and ultraconservative Sunnis, security officials said, as the new president grapples with challenges to his authority.

Tensions have long existed between Salafi Islamists, who are Sunni Muslims, and former Hawthi rebels, who are Shiite Muslims. Nearly 200 people died in fighting late last year between the two sides in northern Saada province.

The latest clashes in neighboring Amran province revealed a new alliance between Hawthis and loyalists of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whom the group fought in a costly six-year war until a cease-fire was reached in early 2010.

They also underline the larger regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia for influence in northern Yemen, an impoverished nation on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, at the doorstep of several oil-producing Gulf nations.

Residents trapped in street fighting in the city of Raada in Amran say the Salafis from the opposition Islah Party were fighting Hawthis teamed up with Saleh loyalists, the two sides firing at each other with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. In another sign of a new alliance, Sheikh Ali Sinan al-Ghouli, a Saleh supporter, told The Associated Press he traveled to the area to assist the Hawthi rebels.

The clashes come a week after Yemen's government installed new governors from the Islah Party in Amran, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of the capital Sanaa, and two other provinces around Saada where Hawthis are concentrated.

According to military analyst Mohammed Ahmed al-Subayhi, the decision by President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to appoint Islah Party members as governors reflects a larger regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

"Saudi Arabia believes that any Hawthi expansion in the region enhances Iran's role in Yemen and poses a threat to the kingdom," al-Subayhi said.

The retired military general added that the Sunni Hashid tribe in Amran is closely aligned with Saudi Arabia.

Shiite-led Iran and Yemen's powerful Sunni Muslim neighbor to the north, Saudi Arabia, are bitter regional rivals and have competing strategic interests in the Gulf. Saudi Arabia was a key player in brokering the deal that forced Saleh to hand over power to Hadi in February, after nearly a year of protests against him.

In July, Hadi warned Iran to stop spying in his country in the wake of claims that an Iranian espionage operation had been uncovered. The U.S. ambassador in Yemen has also repeatedly said that Iran is meddling in the country and playing on specific factions, a reference to Hawthi rebels in the north.

Also on Saturday, security officials said a suspected al-Qaida suicide bomber wounded three people in the southern province of Aden, among them the commander of local tribes who fought alongside the government against the group earlier this year. Abdel-Latif el-Sayid was in critical condition, officials said.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen took advantage of the country's political turmoil to take over large swaths of the country's south last year, but the government and local tribes won back control.

Eli Manning celebrates after a touchdown during the Giants' 23-0 victory over the Panthers on Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Eli Manning didn't need a scintillating fourth quarter comeback Thursday night.

The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, running back Andre Brown and the rest of the New York Giants were too good for the first three quarters to need one.

Brown ran for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start and the routed the Carolina Panthers 36-7.

Four days after rallying from 14 points down to beat Tampa Bay, the Giants dominated the first half, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 20-0 lead.

The defending champion Giants (2-1) were without three starters but it hardly mattered.

Brown got the start in place of Ahmad Bradshaw, who sat out with a neck injury. Ramses Barden caught nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start in place of Hakeem Nicks.

Manning completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Cam Newton struggled all night and was pressured into three interceptions. The Panthers (1-2) had five turnovers, including two by returner Joe Adams.

Mixing run and pass, the Giants dominated the opening half, outgaining the Panthers 303-125.

Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 208 yards in the first half, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett to cap the Giants' game-opening drive and set the tone. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive and marked the third straight game the Panthers have given up a touchdown on an opponent's first drive.

Brown repeatedly bounced off tacklers and Barden had little trouble getting open against a Carolina defense that failed to pressure Manning.

Brown ran 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown last week against Tampa Bay and surpassed that total by the end of the first quarter with 77 yards on seven.

Barden had 123 yards on seven carries at halftime.

Before Thursday night, the fourth-year receiver had never managed more than nine catches for 94 yards receiving in a season.

Any hopes that the Panthers would turn things around in the second half were slowed when rookie returner Joe Adams of the ball on the opening kickoff resulting in another field goal for Lawrence Tynes.

The Panthers didn't get on the board until midway through the third quarter when Newton leaped over the pile from a yard out.

NOTES: For the third straight week Carolina receiver Steve Smith sparred with an opposing cornerback during the game. This week's victim was Corey Webster. ... Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart missed his second game of the season because of a toe injury. The Panthers also were without tackle Byron Bell. ... The Panthers honored Olympic gold medal swimmers Cullen Jones and Ricky Berens.
