Channel Islands Earthquake Felt In Malibu, West LA, Culver City & San Fernando Valley
By Associated Press
MALIBU, Calif. (AP) -- A small earthquake has jolted the Southern California coast but there are no reports of damages or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey says in a preliminary report that the magnitude-4.0 quake struck in the Channel Islands region at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday.
The USGS says the earthquake was centered 30 miles southwest of Malibu and was felt throughout the Los Angeles area, especially in West LA, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley.
Sheriff's and fire officials say there are no reports of damages or injuries from the quake, and the Los Angeles Fire Department is not in earthquake mode.
Brandon David Wilson, a school teacher who lives in the Culver City area, said on Twitter that he felt the earthquake, but it was "just a sharp jolt. No big whoop."

BRoP: Interview with Jacqueline Seewald ? T.W. Fendley, Author
?

?
It?s my pleasure to introduce this week?s Blog Ring of Power author, Jacqueline Seewald, a friend I met through publisher L&L Dreamspell author?s group. She also worked as an academic librarian and an educational media specialist. Eleven of her books of fiction have been published. Her short stories, poems, essays, reviews and articles have appeared in hundreds of diverse publications. She enjoys spending time with family and friends when she isn?t writing. ABOUT YOU
BRoP: How long have you been writing?
JS: I?ve been writing since elementary school. I wrote my first short story in fourth grade.
BRoP: When and why did you begin writing?
JS: My mother was a reader who treasured books, and she made walking to the library a great adventure and pleasure for me as a child. She was a great role model. I started reading early and it made me eager to write my own stories.
BRoP: When did you first consider yourself a professional writer?
JS: The first time I actually got paid for a piece of writing made me feel like a professional writer. It was a short mystery story published in England?s The London Mystery Selection. I was thrilled.
BRoP: What books have most influenced your life?
JS: A great many books have influenced my life. I read constantly. I would say my favorite romance novel is still Jane Austen?s Pride and Prejudice. I love Shakespeare as well. Of course, Bible stories were also influential. The story of Ruth remains an all-time favorite of mine.
BRoP: What genre do you write?
JS: I don?t write in one genre. I enjoy being creative and experimenting with many different types and styles of writing. I write novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and nonfiction. I write for adults, YA and children. I write mystery, romance, horror, science fiction and fantasy. I also write literary stories. Many times I combine several genres.
BRoP: What is your favorite theme/genre to write about?
JS:?My Kim Reynolds novels combine mystery with romance and the paranormal. Kim is a librarian with psychic abilities. She hates these abilities and does her best to repress them, but they just keep coming back to haunt her, as do the spirits of dead people who connect with her. The series begins with THE INFERNO COLLECTION which is available in hardcover and large print in many libraries all over the English speaking world and in all ebook formats from L&L Dreamspell. THE DROWNING POOL is also available in libraries and as an ebook, but also as a paperback from Harlequin Worldwide Mystery. The third novel in the series, THE TRUTH SLEUTH, is available in hardcover as well as large print and will come out as a paperback from Worldwide in 2013 along with THE INFERNO COLLECTION. I intend to continue the series. I feel very connected to the main characters.
BRoP: If you couldn?t be an author, what would your ideal career be?
JS:?I am a retired teacher, have taught English at the university, high school and middle school levels. I enjoyed that very much. Eventually, I became an academic reference librarian at Rutgers and also an educational media specialist. But writing has always been in my blood.

Police blotter: More on Jon Jones and Arianny Celeste?s arrests
Checking in on the legal issues of a few members of the UFC:
-- Jon Jones pled guilty to DWI in Binghamton, N.Y. on Tuesday. His driving privileges were suspended and he was ordered to undergo an alcohol abuse and dependency evaluation. His next hearing is in June, where he will find out his exact sentence. He can have up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000.
Also, Sports Illustrated's Loretta Hunt is reporting that Jones was not alone in his Bentley when he hit a pole. He had two passengers. Dana White commented on the arrest on Inside MMA.
"He's a good kid. He made a stupid mistake.?The thing about social drinking.?Everybody's done it. Everybody was at that age where they jumped in the car, drove home and the next day they said I can't believe that I drove home last night. It's a serious situation that happens here in the United States. I know for a fact Jon has learned from this and hopefully he can educate other people."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people will die in drunk driving accidents this year. A person will be injured in an alcohol-related crash every minute. Shane del Rosario, who fought in the UFC this past weekend, nearly had his MMA career ended because of a drunk driver.
Perhaps the correct attitude for the UFC's president to take on his biggest star getting arrested for drunk driving is to just say how wrong it was, and not try to couch the behavior with, "Everybody's done it," because that's simply not true.
-- Details have emerged from Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste's arrest for domestic violence over the weekend. She was in a fight with her boyfriend, Praveen Chandra, and allegedly kicked him in the face. Police observed cuts on her arms, and also arrested Chandra.

Deutsche: China?s cheap for a reason
Another growl from Deutsche Bank?s emerging markets bear, John-Paul Smith. This time he?s had a close look at Chinese corporates ? and doesn?t like what he sees.
He?s worried about the overcapacity created in the recent huge investment wave, compounded by Beijing?s failure to maintain discipline over its free-spending regions or enforce loudly-touted consolidation plans in key industries, eg steel.
Investors should therefore be wary of the apparent cheapness of Chinese stocks. Far from being a buying opportunity, low prices are signalling ?a major break in the growth model?. Caveat emptor.
Smith argues that the state is the dominant influence in the Chinese economy, and in the activities of leading Chinese companies. So investment decisions are often made for non-economic reasons, notably in strategic sectors, including banking.
Even though listed companies are generally efficient in terms of their operating ratios, they function in an economy with widespread misallocation of resources.
The key driver of Chinese growth over the past thirty years has been rising productivity. But the pace of improvement has slowed, so the authorities have increased investment to try to maintain economic growth.
Beijing responded to the 2008 global crisis with an even bigger economic stimulus than has been generally realised, argues Smith. The combined boost in the fiscal deficit, bank loans and bond finance over 2008-10 reached 27.5 per cent of GDP ? far in excess of Beijing?s original 12.5 per cent aim (which was itself significant by global standards).
Smith says the central government has now realised that it lost control over policy implementation as regional administrations pursued pet projects and the financing created fiscal liabilities backed by assets ?of questionable financial viability?.
And Beijing is now trying to restore discipline ? as highlighted in the Bo Xilai affair. And to give market forces a bigger role in the allocation of capital.
Smith says that?s good in the long run. But in the short-term such reforms ? if they go ahead ? would be disruptive for companies, and for equity investors. Global conditions will make life very difficult for Beijing:
Against this discouraging backdrop, we expect the authorities to proceed extremely slowly, to the extent that for relatively long periods of time, it may not even be obvious that there is any coherent policy direction. There is also the possibility that if there is a major shortfall in growth, we may see the sort of policy easing, which investors were anticipating at the start of 2012, or even in extreme circumstances a reaction against a more market oriented economy, which would shift the balance of power within the ruling elite away from those favouring market oriented
reforms.
Chinese companies, which have already seen return on capital declining because of overcapacity, will struggle.

Source: Deutsche Bank
Chinese stock prices are low by historic standards and diverging from the upward march of GDP, as the charts below show.

Source: Deutsche Bank. Click to enlarge
But Smith says that investors should not be tempted. He draws parallels with apparent cheapness of US stocks in 2007 ? which was followed not by a stock market recovery but by economic turmoil. Smith writes:
The implication? is that China, like the US five years ago, faces a major disruptive economic event, though at this stage it is too early to tell whether this is more likely to take the form of a lengthy transition period, or a major financial crash.
Smith concedes there could be some bullish surprises that might influence his general bearishness. In the short term, oil prices could fall or Beijing could engineer a stock market rally. In the medium term, China?s legion of private companies could grow faster than expected. Longer term, the huge state-led infrastructure investments of recent years could pay off (though, naturally, Smith doubts this will happen).
Smith?s arguments dig deeper than the standard macro-economic debate on whether China faces a soft or hard landing, or something in between. He may not be right ? but his corporate level analysis begs a response from the China bulls. Any horned beasts care to comment?

ZeroN slips surly bonds, re-runs your 3D gestures in mid-air
Playback of 3D motion capture with a computer is nothing new, but how about with a solid levitating object? MIT's Media Lab has developed ZeroN, a large magnet and 3D actuator, which can fly an "interaction element" (aka ball bearing) and control its position in space. You can also bump it to and fro yourself, with everything scanned and recorded, and then have real-life, gravity-defying playback showing planetary motion or virtual cameras, for example. It might be impractical right now as a Minority Report-type object-based input device, but check the video after the break to see its awesome potential for 3D visualization.

Autism Blog - Postsecondary education and employment among ...
Prof. Paull Shattuck?s group from Washington University in St. Louis has published a study in the journal Pediatrics today entitled Postsecondary education and employment among youth with an autism spectrum disorder. The full study is available free on the Pediatrics website.
Prof. Shattuck?s group presented results on autistic adults and the transition from school to adulthood previously. At IMFAR last year they presented The Role of Parental Expectations In Predicting Post-High School Outcomes for Youth with ASD and a paper in Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine discussing how autistic young adults miss out on much-needed services. Prof. Shattuck presented to the IACC in September of last year.
This sort of work is extremely important and, yet, little attention has been placed on issues surrounding autistic adults and the transition from the school programs.
The abstract is below for the present study is below.
Objectives: We examined the prevalence and correlates of postsecondary education and employment among youth with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Methods: Data were from a nationally representative survey of parents, guardians and young adults with an ASD. Participation in postsecondary employment, college or vocational education and lack of participation in any of these activities were examined. Rates were compared with those of youth in three other eligibility categories ? speech/language impairment, learning disability, and mental retardation. Logistic regression was used to examine correlates of each outcome.
Results: For youth with an ASD, 34.7% had attended college and 55.1% had held paid employment during the first six years after high school. Over 50% of youth who had left high school in the past two years had no participation in employment or education. Youth with an ASD had the lowest rates of participation in employment and the highest rates of no participation compared to youth in other disability categories. Higher income and higher functional ability were associated with higher adjusted odds of participation in postsecondary employment and education.
Conclusions: Youth with an ASD have poor postsecondary employment and education outcomes, especially in the first two years after high school. Those from lower income families and those with greater functional impairments are at heightened risk for poor outcomes. Further research is needed to understand how transition planning prior to high school exit can facilitate a better connection to productive postsecondary activities.
Here is the press release from Washington University in St. Louis:
Youth with autism face barriers to employment and education after high school
Rate of disconnection from work and school higher for low-income young adults
Compared with youth with other disabilities, young adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face a disproportionately difficult time navigating work and educational opportunities after high school, finds a new study by Paul Shattuck, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis.?Thirty-five percent of the youth with ASDs had no engagement with employment or education in the first six years after high school,? Shattuck says.
?Rates of involvement in all employment and education were lower for those with lower income.?
The study, published in the current issue of the journal Pediatrics, examined data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (NLTS2), a nine-year study of adolescents who were enrolled in special education at the outset. The NLTS2 included groups of adolescents with ASDs, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities and speech and language impairments.
?Compared with youth in the three other disability categories, those with an ASD had significantly lower rates of employment and the highest overall rates of no participation in any work or education whatsoever,? Shattuck says.
?Those with an ASD had a greater than 50-percent chance of being unemployed and disengaged from higher education for the first two years after high school.?
Shattuck notes that approximately 50,000 youth with ASDs will turn 18 this year in the United States.
?Many families with children with autism describe turning 18 as falling off a cliff because of the lack of services for adults with ASDs,? he says.
?The years immediately after high school are key. They are the time when people create an important foundation for the rest of their lives.
?There needs to be further research into services for young adults with ASDs to help them make the transition into adulthood and employment or further education.?
Shattuck says that particular attention should be paid to interventions that will help poorer youth overcome barriers to accessing services and achieving fuller participation in society.
This study was funded by the Organization for Autism Research, Autism Speaks and the National Institute of Mental health.
Shattuck?s study co-authors are Sarah Carter Narendorf, Benjamin Cooper and Paul Sterzing of the Brown School; Mary Wagner, PhD, of SRI International; and Julie Lounds Taylor, PhD, of Vanderbilt University.
Shattuck will give a keynote presentation on his research at the International Meeting for Autism Research in Toronto on May 16, 2012.

NJ town's police chief: No, we didn't ban texting while walking
1 day
Rosa Golijan
Those of us prone to typing out text messages while walking down streets were ready to storm Fort Lee, N.J., with pitch forks, torches and protest signs on Monday morning. After all, there were reports that texting while walking was banned in the town?? and that people caught doing so were fined.
But based on what?Thomas Ripoli?? chief of the Fort Lee Police Department?? told msnbc.com, we should probably relax and remember that not?everything we read on the Internet is always true.?
Ripoli, who'd been fielding calls from all over the world, says that discussion of his town's pedestrian safety was somehow taken out of context and that "things got out of hand."?Folks who are texting while walking in Fort Lee are indeed issued a $54 jaywalking ticket ... but only?if they also happen to be jaywalking at the same time.
Ripoli explains that Fort Lee saw three fatalities and more than?20 pedestrian accidents since the beginning of the year. In an effort to crack down on dangerous behavior while walking and prevent further accidents, the town's police department has started a safety?education?campaign, stopped more than 600 pedestrians and handed them pamphlets on the topic, and issued over 117 jaywalking tickets.
But not a single ticket so far?? nor any in the?foreseeable?future ?has been issued?specifically?for texting while walking.
Want more tech news, silly puns or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

To 4G Or Not 4G? Apple Pulls ?WiFi+4G? Branding For iPads
What is 4G? Many an armchair philosopher over the past few weeks has pondered this concept and now, thanks to a minor tempest caused by upset customers, Apple has changed their iPad branding from "WiFi+4G" to "WiFi+Cellular." Although the iPads were compatible with US 4G networks, the iPads didn't work with international 4G connections, thereby dropping a few folks in Australia into a tizzy. To prevent this, Apple put the old moniker down the memory hole and replaced it with the new naming convention.quinton coples a.j. jenkins riley reiff david decastro travis pastrana aj jenkins shea mcclellin
